Country Kids

Country Kids

A stream, green grass, a hill,
The estuary, marram grass, and the ocean.
Fresh air, blue skies and lots of cows.
Country kids, doing as country kids do.

A Saturday, a big Saturday, race day.
Primed and pumped, washed and polished.
Nerves and excitement, adrenalin flowing.
Awaiting the starter’s orders.

Country kids, doing as country kids do.
Fresh air, blue skies and lots of cows.
The estuary, marram grass, the ocean,
A stream, green grass and a hill.

And they are off, number 21 streaks into the lead.
Rides the first wave, high, high, too high.
He hits the first. Number 8 sneaks on past,
Takes the bend wide and is left wallowing in still water.

A stream, green grass, a hill,
The estuary, marram grass, and the ocean.
Fresh air, blue skies and lots of cows.
Country kids, doing as country kids do.

Number 21 (that’s me by the way) comes round the corner,
Rides the rapid and heads towards the tunnel.
Number 8 (that’s Jason) drifts out of the still water.
We are side by side as we enter the tunnel.

Country kids, doing as country kids do.
Fresh air, blue skies and lots of cows.
The estuary, marram grass, the ocean,
A stream, green grass and a hill.

White water turns into black water,
Side by side we fight our way through the tunnel.
We see the finish line through the rocks.
Who will take the fastest, safest path?

A stream, green grass, a hill,
The estuary, marram grass, and the ocean.
Fresh air, blue skies and lots of cows.
Country kids, doing as country kids do.

Smack into the side of the rock, the rapid sucks me down.
Jason sees his line and shoots down the centre.
Rides high the rapid, right over the finish line.
I flounder around in draw water and float over the line a
victorious second.

Country kids, doing as country kids do.
Fresh air, blue skies and lots of cows.
An important day, race day, on the hill.
Jason and I racing our felt pens down the creek.
